Ellie is a 21-year old Bachelor of Arts student, who is currently studying. Her majors include Journalism and Non-Fiction Writing, as well as Gender Studies. For the past year she’s been working casually at Universal Store, as she looks to enter the industry when graduating. She is an avid reader, and is never able to walk past a bookstore without going in (even though she has so many books on her “to read” list).
Q1 – Between COVID-19, the race tensions and university – how has it affected you (if at all)?
When COVID-19 hit, I was in my final semester of uni, trying to find an internship. Being at home 24/7 really took a toll on my mental health and left me feeling very lost, emotional, helpless and confused. The future looked extremely uncertain, and still does a bit. The race tensions have been a wake up call for me as a white person and have shown me that there’s more I can be doing to amplify minority voices and call out racism and micro aggressions even by my family members.
Q2 – What is something that has stressed you out recently?
Other than the coronavirus pandemic, the shift to online learning at uni has been difficult to overcome. I know that I’m in a very lucky position to be able to study from home, but getting through the work had been a challenge, and I feel like my grades have slipped a bit.
Q3 – What TV shows and music are you vibing right now/why?
Love Life and The Bold Type on Stan are my favourites at the moment because of how relatable they are and their feminist messages. They’re empowering. And The Great on Stan too because I love historic-based shows and movies. As for music, I’ve been obsessed with Angie McMahon. I think her voice is absolutely incredible and I can’t get enough of her. Same goes for Lime Cordiale and Ocean Alley – I’ve been listening to a lot of Alt Aussie music at the moment.
Q4 – What are you currently looking forward to?
Graduation!! I’m hoping that September graduations will go ahead, because after 3.5 years in my degree, I am really excited to walk up on stage and graduate in front of my parents. And I’m also looking forward to international travel being allowed so that I can go and visit my best friend in Italy, and travel around Europe.
Q5 – What brands are you really into at the moment, and why?
Most of the brands I wear are ones that are stocked at Universal Store, because that’s what I have to wear at work. But of those, I love Thrills and Patagonia. Thrills because they’re just a really cool brand, really chill and I love their oversized tees and their denim. And Patagonia because of how conscious they are about the environment, they’re all about sustainability – most, if not all, of their products are made from recycled materials.
I’ve also just found Flex Mami’s card game Reflex, which is amazing. It’s about critical thinking and creating discussions, so I can’t wait to try it out with my friends and family.
